A Mother's Torment ... A Friend In Need by Catherine Dornan

Welcome to Team Ella!

My name is Catherine and I live in Cairns with my two children and my husband Jeremy. I am a stay at home mum that also runs my small handmade business BlueBee.

This year my son started prep and one of his classmates has a younger sister, Ella,  who has a rare form of a metabolic condition called Propionic Acidemia.

The picture above is Miss “Belly Monster” Ella and my daughter Bonnie.

My son is in prep this year and one of his classmates is Ella’s older sister. I’ve known Amanda (Ella’s mum) since the start of the school year and have learned of Ella’s condition over that time. I can’t even imagine what it is like to have your child so sick and needing such a drastic operation as a transplant in order to go on living.

While Cairns is a great place to live it doesn’t give you access to the best medical care when you have a rare disease as Ella does. a condition that has an occurrence of approximately 1 in 100,000 people, Ella has a very severe case of this disease.  Ella nearly lost her life at just 2 days old and she has continued to fight for her life and is now 26 months old. She has been admitted Hospital over 30 times. Her disease has progressed to the point that the only way forward is to have a liver transplant. This is not something that can be done in Cairns and the family are having to move to Brisbane in November. Contrary to popular belief, Cairns is not a suburb just north of Brisbane and it is not cheap to move a family, let alone one with a child needing special care and treatment.
I can only imagine the stress and pressure Amanda is feeling and I really want to help her, to ease her load. That is why I am hosting this auction.

Catherine will host a handmade auction on 2nd October 2013 starting at 10am through to 10pm. All funds raised will be donated to the family to assist with the expensive task of moving the family to Brisbane for Ella to recieve treatment.

I take this opportunity to thank you for your Donation. I couldn't help my friend without the generous and kind people I have met through the Handmade community online.

You can find the album of participating businesses here.

Auction items which will be available for bidding on Wednesday 2nd October 2013 are here.

If you want to learn more about Ella and her fight to live, you can follow her story here.

Auction starts at 10:00am (Brisbane Time) and concludes at 10:00pm (Brisbane Time) on Wednesday 2nd October 2013.
