Awesome Product Descriptions - How To Stand Out From The Crowd by Kiah Oosterbeek

How do I make my product interesting?

How do I make it unique and appealing?

These were the questions I asked myself as I was starting my business, Early Warning Jewellery. As the name suggests, I sell jewellery, semi-precious stone jewellery to be specific.

I had previously seen stalls at markets that sold jewellery like this but as usual, I felt it was over priced. That's when I got the idea of starting my own business selling them myself.

My next step was to work out how to make my product different from others and stand out from the crowd. I wanted to make the jewellery reflect my own unique personality and that's when I decided to give my products their own ‘properties’, inspired by my love of all things mythological. Each of my stones does something different from sparkling when fairies are around to burning like hot embers when phoenixes fly by. Just a bit of fun really but it got people's attention.

Each stone had a story, something interesting and unique to offer each owner. This attracted a lot of customers that loved the idea behind it. I’ve found many people share my love of all things fantasy and mythology so my products immediately appealed to them. It also made my product more than just a necklace or pair of earrings, this made them exciting and meaningful.

Putting your own unique spin on a product makes it more appealing. People will be more willing to buy a product if has deeper meaning for them personally. Giving your product a clever description makes it different, giving it a description that reflects your own personality makes it unique.

Think about this as you’re creating your products. For example, instead of writing "3m x 3m child’s space quilt", you could say "3m x 3m child’s safety space blankie that keeps away the monsters".

If you were buying a blanket for your son and you were given these two blankets to choose from, which would you choose?

It’s something as simple as saying your handmade quilt will keep away bad dreams, brings luck, holds emotional value, keeps you safe etc ... the ideas are endless and these are the details that make your products stand out.

Every product has the potential to be awesome! We just need to give them the chance to be awesome!

Being a handmade business owner not only gives you the opportunity to be creative, it also gives you permission to create something beautiful, unique and special.
